I need to install an oil cooler and am just planning it out and I have a couple of questions:-
1. does it matter which way up you install them i.e. the ports on the top or the bottom? To make best use of the airflow I'd like to install with the ports on the bottom.
2. Elevation of the oil cooler, the location I'd like to use is just above my radiator therefor quite a bit higher than the sandwich plate take offs for the hoses.
I just want to make sure that where and how I install the cooler will not adversely affect oil flow or pressure. _________________ Porsche 924 GT8 track day car project

cant see it being an issue. We've run some in similar positions in the past. Prefill it, before flipping and mounting _________________ Impreza Race Car, 1200kg, 480bhp - SLS/SMRC

Do you need to install one? What were the oil temperatures running?
Just took an oil cooler off a mates car, that he installed thinking he needed one, because he couldn't get the oil up to working temperature. |

Definitely needs one for track use. I'll be running it with a thermostatic sandwich plate so the oil cooler only in use when oil above 80deg. _________________ Porsche 924 GT8 track day car project

Oil coolers are not meant to be mounted with the fittings on the base. Only the tops or side. There is more information on Google if needed but don't fit it higher than the sandwich plate and have the fittings on the bottom as it may drain back. |

Google has a lot of opinions but no definitive answers it would seem.
I dont have much option than to fit it higher than the sandwich plate unfortunately as the sandwich plate will be about 3" up from the bottom of the sump level.
I've found a cooler with side ports that will fit the space I have. As far as I can work out, the main issue with drain back is mis-calculating / measuring oil level correctly. I've not found any bad reports from an operation perspective. _________________ Porsche 924 GT8 track day car project

You can fit the cooler higher than the sandwich plate. Just don’t orientate the cooler with fittings on the bottom. |
