I'll take some tomorrow when I take the head off. There's nothing really to look at at the moment apart from 2 headbolts covered in oil.

Right head is off. I cannot see anything obvious so I am beginning to run out of idea's.

Pics -

Tryed pulling on cambelt and pushing the piston down with butt of a hammer. Its moves so many revolutions and then gets stuck. So you can pull it back the other way a few revolutions and then it gets stuck again. Going to take the starter motor off to see if it was catching on that and also the oil filter and check for any metal in there.

you may aswell whip the sump off and get a good look from the underside. and watch if anything is up from there too.

Hard too see with the pics but doesnt look to be any piston/valve damage, or det marks (could be but just looks like water/oil/gasket)

Right guys, Big update -

Took sump off and everything looks as it should. Took out the starter motor and had a look in. My clutch plate is fucked, its scraped and chipped all the way round, a bolt is mangled and there are a few pretty deep scrapes in the gearbox housing! The engine turns over from the bottom crank with a ratchet and socket.

I think this is maybe goe's to show that un-mechanically minded people shouldn't make their own diagnosis and start to strip engines when they don't really know what they are doing. I feel like a right dick as now I am going to have to pay for someone to put my engine back togther, new clutch, flywheel and all relevant gaskets, headbolts etc etc.

I couldn't get any decent pics as there was very little light. I just hope to god that this is the only problem and the engine isn't at fault.

Thanks for all the help it is much appreciated.

Jamie

surely you can put the engine back together?

Clean what you can, get all the old gasket off etc... fit a layered metal gasket, new head bolts if they are needed (stretch) and bolt it down in sequence and to torque.

Then that just leaves flywheel and clutch

I have stripped everything from the bay apart from the Bottom end and gearbox though. I was visually trying to put it back together today and it made me dizzy haha. The guy who is doing it is a bit of a Starlet guru so should take him long - He's only 35 an hour so shouldn't be too pricey. The timing needs set up again too along with all gaskets replacing.

Engine is now out of car and all gaskets, bearings, headbolts etc being replaced. Turns out whoever fitted my clutch last month overtightened the bolts and one has sheered off. Last thing I would have expected to happen as Ricky Gauld did the clutch. Nevermind.

New Exedy Paddle clutch ordered. Headset ordered. New flywheel ordered.

Hopefully thats all the parts I need and car should be back on road next week depending when I recieve ordered parts.

good stuff.... no way to prove fault in the case of overtightning. Can only assume it was to specified torque, and the bolt was maybe weak, who knows.... not worth thinking about now though

Yea I'm not particularly bothered in the whole finger pointing malarky. Its my own fault for putting in a second hand clutch. Live and learn huh!
