I've taken some time to put together a website to support the Duratec in Detail's Facebook page. For those of you not familiar with the page, it blogs my Duratec engine builds. The site is not intended to replace the Facebook page, but I hope it will provide an index-able resource for those interested in the Duratec.

It is over a year since I last posted. That's not because there's been nothing happening, far from it, it was more that the engineering work on the engine came to a halt. It has proved to be reliable and the car went on to win the Super Lap Scotland Pro Class in 2018.

. . . and times came down to 52 second laps.

But the big development that year shifted to putting some 'aero' on the car. Firstly with a rear wing and a Caterham Lavante front wing. Later I made my own front wing, and with help from Simon McBeath, we developed the aero further. The success in SLS, and a similar success for another car Simon helped with in the Time Attack, resulted in the idea of an article in the Racecar Engineering magazine which was published over three months earlier this year (March April & May). https://www.facebook.com/RacecarEngineering/ The basis for the article was a session at the full size wind tunnel at MIRA.

That was really good fun and you can read a PDF version of my story at

do you have any clear comparison vbox data for this sort of setup with/without aero?

Ours has been in too many stages to get clear comparisons with/without

It's a little cloudy in terms of data as so many things have changes over recent events. Unfortunately my VBox gave up at the SLS, so no data for the post wind tunnel yet. But so far the wings have made it about 1 seconds quicker in the dry, and ~5 seconds in the wet. The main thing, as a driver, is that it is easier to drive - basically the harder you push the better it feels. And that makes me a little more consistent as I've never been one to drive right on the edge.

Another 18 months has pasted and time for a final update . . .

The car ran faultlessly all season (well almost, more below) and it scored maximum points in all the SLS rounds. That gave me joint 'King of the Hill' trophy for 2019.

But what pleased me most was breaking into the 51 second lap times, and on road legal tyres too.

. . . and I lost my fear of reverse, although not quite as quick!

The only significant development to the aero was a drag reduction mod to the front wheel arches.

The engine started to run rough and lose power mid season. That prompted a precautionary rebuild, but the issue turned out to be the Cat breaking up and sliding down the exhaust, restricting the exit somewhat. I am pleased to say the engine itself proved to be in very good condition.

So I'm signing off here, and retiring (quite literally from my full time job). The car only did one round of the SLS in 2020 championship, and it will still be seen at KH in 2021, but it might just be my son, Gordon, driving it Smile

After absorbing all that's happened this year (within the family), I think 2021 will be a less intense motorsport year, and I doubt I'll do any serious championship chasing. Gordon wants to drive the Caterham more, so more trackdays with it and full SMRC with the Mini - the Mini is where the effort will go.
