Hi all,

Joined this forum to see if I could get some help on what course of action to take in terms of becoming involved in racing. I am currently looking at different types of racing disciplines e.g. karting, autograss etc. I will have a long summer break and I am looking to both work to fund this and spend time on this small project. Budget between 1000-1500 approx. No ability to transport additional car/kart. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Chris.

1500 without transport wont be enough to compete and not transport a kart at Wskc, Decent chassis/engine will be that plus tyres, license, membership etc.

They have an open day this Sunday where you can try different class's of kart etc might be worth popping along and see if they have any offers etc on?

We were 800 for engine rebuilds maybe once a season, gives an idea of costs involved outwith race suits, boots, helmets etc. Karting has became too expensive imho hence why im back doing trackdays again.

Ideally I would like to compete wheel to wheel, but track days still appeal to me as I am looking to gain experience in repairing and modifying a car for racing/circuits. The main thing is im unsure if I could buy a car, make it ready for track days(roll cage?) as well as insurance for under 1500 excluding helmets etc.

you could, but you would need to all the work yourself and it would have to be a very modest car

More than happy putting time and effort into a car. Just I really want to make sure im getting the most for my money. What type of cars/manufacturer would you recommend to look at? Also I think I would have to limit my engine size as i have only been driving for a year and insurance alone could blow my budget.

1600cc max I would think.

My choice would be a 205 GTi. Old but easy to fix.

Any 90s hatch would fit the bill too, but it would need to be cheap as chips to leave budget for cage/seats/fire system etc
