A report from me for my weekend with full videos (yawn). . .

Saturday

Iím usually well organised for the SLS with plenty of time to check, and double check things. But this time it was different. Family matters preventing me looking at the car until late on Thursday. And, to my horror, an issue that I thought was just a loose throttle cable, turned out to be much more serious Ė the throttle linkage had broken. Sheered bolts and cracked casting meant a part had to couriered for Friday, but it never arrived. So I revised design with the blipper moved to the pedal box. Luckily it turned out to be simpler than I thought and seemed to work well.
Panic over!

Slightly stressed, I made scrutineering on Friday and took the opportunity to get Ronnie to fit some SG compound R888. I thought they may work better in the wet. The problem was that they were narrower with a 60 profile with a very stiff sidewall, and not what the car likes.

Saturday started wet as expected and, still feeling somewhat stressed, the plan was to scrub the tyres in, keep it safe, and survive the day. I missed the fact that overtaking was on the left and that wrong footed me a bit in the warm-up, but settled down towards the end.

https://youtu.be/e16t_G4FEdo

The left side overtaking rule is not the best idea for an anticlockwise circuit Ė the biggest issue was not being able to tell immediately which cars were on slow laps and being caught out by high closing speeds on the racing line. This needs to change, verging on unsafe at times!

Going back to the tyres, they improved throughout practice but, with drying conditions, the softer compound didnít really compensate for the smaller section. Although it felt a little looser, they didnít feel too bad, but times were disappointing at 57.77

I decided to stick with them for qualifying believing it was me, and not the tyres, that was the problem. Big mistake; my times didnít get out of the 57ís with a 57.26, although traffic issues didnít help.

The weather was settling down and looking dry for the final, so I eventually decided to change back to my low profile and wide GG R888. The R888 do seem to come up to temperature quite quickly and responds well to warming on the out lap. They donít have the grip of the Kuhmoís, and didnít give the same confidence, but I just went for it anyway and knocked half a second off qually with a 56.72.

So the day ended 3rd in class and less than 2 tenths behind Fee Ė to be honest better than I had expected after feeling Ďoff formí all day.

Sunday

Sunday felt much better Ė we going in the right direction, the sun was out, wind was light, and I had got some good sleep. I have to run with more fuel when in the reverse direction (to prevent fuel surge) so to recalibrate my quantities for the day, I filled the tank. Thatís quite a lot of weight, but it lets me accurately judge fuel quantity for the final.
Warm-up was fun and relaxed but with a full tank the times were not the priority. I was really just looking for more time to understand the tyres and put into practice a few tip Sandy Forrest had made after driving the car at the SIDC.

Practice saw times edge down with the fuel load, but with the times still in the 56ís it wasnít quite gelling like it did last year. Maybe tyres, maybe track, it was just that annoying feeling of doing a good lap but not getting the good time. But the chat in the paddock suggested that I wasnít the only one feeling like that.

Quallifying Ė I made a point of being first out to try a practice for the final. Slow out lap warming the tyres, wide at the hairpin and then one flying lap. It all felt good but with still quite a lot of fuel, not a spectacular time. I settled down to a series of hot and cool down laps and then with a well-timed final lap with minimum fuel, I got my best time of 55.76.

The single lap final procedure has now in becoming very engrained in my brain (I have almost become ritualistic about it) and I find it easier to focus with every round . It all came together with warming the tyres to perfection and a good clean lap producing my best of the day - 55.35. Thatís within 3 tenths of my PB on the Kumho, and faster than I thought Iíd be this year. It placed me 6 overall and 2nd in class, 3 tenths behind Fee. Congrats to Fee who clearly also got it right too, and had the edge all weekend. But I did spend a few minutes with my fingers crossed before she crossed the line.

As I said on FB... I thought you'd beaten her with your lap in the final Laughing You both seem to step it up a bit though Very Happy

There definitely is a skill outwith being 'quick' to the outlap. Its quite easy to see some folk maybe going about it inefficiently.

I'm constantly trying to change Fee's mindset to SLS too Laughing

Instead of publishing a gallery of images from the event, the Daily Record are now putting all the still images together to make up a short 2 minute video featuring a selection of shots by myself and Eddie Kelly Smile
