so... the turbo

Seems the up-pipe failed, and deposited a tiny <hic> bit of metal into the exhaust wheel. End result is mangled core and mangled housing.

Need to see whats gone on with the up-pipe now

I havent seen it first hand, but I've asked the guys at WP to check out the Up Pipe to the turbo. It should be pretty obvious if its come from there (I dont know where it could have come from). It does look rather large to have gotten up the entry from manifold to turbo.

outcome - exhaust housing is scrap, exhaust wheel is scrap ( Laughing no surprise after that ), core will need replaced . Billet compressor wheel and inlet housing are good.

So.... 75% new turbo

Nasty. Upside is turbo will be nice and fresh.

Looks about 64mm, that's about bang on 2.5 inches.

Trimmed bit of exhaust/boost pipe that has somehow got in there and been forgotten about?

thoughts are....

Fee's turbo is mounted slightly different to mine - it required a bit of rotation to clear her VVT heads (I have non variable older STi ones). This was done by converting the up-pipe to a slip joint. I think there was some sort of venturi effect bitty inside, that was sliced when the pipe was cut. This would have been solid at the time but came loose somehow.

I havent seen the pipe so cant say for certain

Updates:

New slip-jointed up-pipe from Lateral.

New headers required - whatever caused the upipe to get so hot has done some damage to the headers too. Matty welded them, and they held for the SMRC weekend but they need replaced.

A corroded connection to an injector was found, and some changes to knock control were made. EGT probe also getting wired into ECU to monitor EGTs. Thoughts are the injector may have got some AFFF foam into it from the fire back during initial testing.

Injectors away to be tested.

Potentially new fuel pumps and filters too - after a 30amp fuse melted with Fee at the weekend

I'll let Fee fill in the blanks.... but the car has some issues at the weekend that meant she could only run minimal boost due to fuel pressure/supply issues.

1.2bar boost (1.9 is max)

Mid 55 on 888s with ~10mph lower TV
55.503 on old slicks that were being sold and Fee had kicking about on the day ~10mph lower TV.

car may have had minimal boost but methinks her brain compensated with maximum drive Smile

i think something clicked Very Happy

I have told her about the diff setup before and how it just seems to... er... grip with daft amounts of throttle... she said she could actually feel that on Sunday Laughing Its set up to adjust F/R dependant on inputs (TPS/Speed etc).... also helps alot with brakes by adding centre diff lock when braking hard - helps stop front rotating differently from rear (locking)

I suppose with lower boost the kick in the arse coming out of the corners was less brutal so allowed her to push it a bit more without a whallop of torque to fight. Boost is throttle dependant though.

Braking seems to be a big difference on the data i've seen. Peak 80bar of force, I think previous races (on much better tyres) would see her using about 50bar peak

So... Fee dropped the car off at WP, and they have a look over the fuelling issue and found a broken wire. I'll need to be shown which wire as I'm not an auto electrician LOL, but Matty says 'the wire which switches the load from ignition to direct battery had failed, so it was overloading the circuit.'

Anyway... hopefully thats it fixed, but will get tested one the dyno once the headers have an EGT probe fitted and setup with Syvecs.

Flat Floors, side exit exhausts and weight.

I want to flat floor the car, and have designs/materials and mounting pretty much covered. Side exit exhaust shouldnt be too much of an issue - BUT adding ~35kg of weight to the car (low to the ground) will have penelties. So... where can we save some Laughing I'll need to get a swatche at Andy Forrests car as that has a massive 6dly engine but weighs about 100kg less than Fees!

metal work on fees

flat floor only really works if you are about half the ride height of mine- and i am about 80mm..

for all the additional weight is it really worth it, as its unlikely to yield any downforce..

floor would be lower than current floor, so aiming for 40-60mm. Splitter is about 60-70mm just now.

Will see... its been something I've wanted to fanny about with for ages, but will prob re-do the splitter/cannards first Smile

Do you have a wish list of things to be done on the car?

I have some that I would like (time/budget permittng)

Strip down susp - get checked over, and converted to remote rather than piggy back
clean up underside of car, arches etc
splitter / floor
SDM subframes
Gearbox cooler
Rear diff cooler
side exit exhaust
