Had one for a test drive for the day... really liked it.

My main worry was the rear space, but it just has enough for our needs, and Bruno was a bit pit-out to start with but soon adjusted to the change in his head room Laughing

Goes well, much better road manners than Toureg. Gearbox is nice.

Towing - Its the 3.0 S so it has enough grunt. Its plated to 2500kg (still to check, but thats what the chap said in Porsche).

Thats enough for the Impreza/Trailer BUT does the tow cars capacity have to be matched to the Trailers plated capacity? (i.e 3500kg)

It seems a grey area but there's stuff online about the plated weight having to match the car, and stories of people being fined even if the trailer was empty, as in you could load up the trailer and be towing illegally.

its akin to have a spare tyre that's bald, its not on the car but its still illegal and can cause you to get fined.

Regards downsizing the car with a little one on the way, do not underestimate the amount of additional stuff you will drag around. If you want to go Porsche why not the Cayenne with the correct towing capacity and bigger all round?

I fancy an SQ7, ample towing capacity and they sound amazing Laughing

if you have an old license then no, all that matters is the actual weight of the laden trailer if they take you to a weighbridge.

With the new licenses, in order to avoid the whole weighbridge thing, they just take the max weight of the trailer off the rating plate, so you can be done towing an empty car transporter weighing 600kg because they count it at 2800kg or whatever.

Its also worsened by the fact that for you need to compare it to the vehicles towing limit, whereas post 1997 drivers need to compare it to the kerb weight of the car.

Adam,

I just changed the RR for a Cayenne (went for the S E-Hybrid though for my green credentials) and am loving it over the RR. I did look at Macans too but felt they were too tight in the back.

Graham D tows with his Cayenne and loves it for that. He hauls everything.

I would say that, unless you're absolutely set on an Macan, the Cayenne offers all the Macan does and more in terms of space.

You're welcome to a nosey round mine if you wanted.

Hi
Does it have to be a SUV?
The Audi A6 Allroad is 2500kg towing which is 400kg over the rest of the A6 range. Depends if the estate style floats your boat but I never wanted an SUV hence me having an A6. Air suspension, fold-away tow bar connected to CAN bus of car and a few other bits and bobs make it perfect at towing. Manual control to over-ride suspension height can help when attaching trailers.

It's GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) and GCW (Gross Combined Weight) you need to establish, as well as not exceeding the plated max weight on the trailer, or axle weight as it might be stated.

See here: http://www.porscheownersmanuals.com/2014-macan-manual/11/337/Weights

2014-2016 Macan GCW is 4,950kg. That means the car, it's contents and the trailer and it's contents cannot exceed the 4,950kg rating. Also says in that link the towing capacity is 2,000kg. The kerb weight is stated there at 2,105kg depending on options, so that would give you 2,845kg for gear, trailer and car with no more than 2,000kg on trailer and car. That assumes you aren't going above the plated weights on either car or trailer.

MGW for Macan is 2,550kg so you might find it a bit tight tbh.

I've always been of the thought that towing rules and regulations and weights are far far far more complicating than they should be.

This thread further confirms my thoughts.

God bless the transit recovery wagon.

I saw what i think was Graemes new one... so his white one will be at Porsche as trade in/second hand.

You buying new or used?

If new, RR Velar worth a look in that sort of size. Had one for a couple of days, bit sparse inside but very nice all round motor. Same sort of towing capacity as Macan though, about 4,890kg all in, 2,400kg max towing weight.
