Thinking over a couple of options....

1 car for daily use, dog, bike, towing etc - Toureg, Discovery, Pathfinder etc - sub 10k

Or

a van and a small new car (already know that I want a VW UP Very Happy )

so, Vans.... whats a good medium sized van that can tow well and has some grunt?

I'm debating the logic of the 3.0V6 Mercedes vito again.
Nice dualiner version with rear seats in black, auto, cruise etc

LWB high roof Sprinter. Smile

I got my one from force vans on ebay, alot of them have night heaters & overhead a/c, extra seats/storage etc.

My one came with a 7k watt generator.

Not via my phone but ebay item 221700786566 is something they're selling, you'll find their other items from there.

I'm using a LWB 2012 Vito 113CDI just now, thought the VW T5's were too much over priced compared to the Vito. It tows well and is comfortable enough to use as a daily driver if need be.

I'd love a long nose Transporter like the van I used to use, but the scene tax on them is ridiculous, they aren't *that* good.

Parents' neighbour has had a string of Vitos over the last couple of decades and every one of them has suffered tin worm.

Sprinters, same as above, they're great vans to do distances in but you'll see ones less than 3 years old starting to bubble or get orange trails out the sliding door rail.

I'd be after an Iveco Daily or a good old Tranny Laughing

rust should only be an issue on vitos upto 2007 as they galvanised them after that.

Is the van for biking, towing & tools or are you thinking overnight for 1-2 folk trackside too?

Iv got 5 Vauxhall vivaro sportives and they are fantastic for towing and i get about 34MPG when towing.

drive like a car and there cheap to service and repair.

Only 2 issues iv had out the 20+ vivaros iv had over the years are gearboxes and injectors.

anything over 100k dont touch, from new ul very rarely get any issues

Transporter!

Love mine, converted the back of it for no more than 300 quid and been away in it to the alps and all over mountain biking and skiing. 2.5 and tows our big bj trailer and the ginetta no problems. Touch wood no issues with it in 25k miles too. Drive a lot more like a big car than most of the vans I've driven,

Replaced the seats with electric m3 seats for comfort, which only cost the price of the seats, the rest just fabbed up in the garage.

Yes theres scene tax, but it makes them less subject to depreciate, and if you do the right things to it it will appreciate. Especially if you get a facelift.

Yes a disco four or a big car will tow better, but for biking and skiing, being able to have all your stuff with you and get changed in plenty of space in a warm dry area is invaluable. If you convert it right (keep it easily removable) you can fit a huge amount of stuff in the back as well even in a swb (didnt want a lwb daily for ease of parking etc).
