I have been through a fair few camera setups and I have found one that I am very pleased with so thought I'd share, it is very easy to use.

One my bug bears was that when you are waiting to start racing, or in SLS sitting in the pits waiting to go out, your camera is on and burning through battery and SD card space. If your camera is behind you it can be an issue to get to easily.

Camera
SJ4000, its a GoPro copy so it has a wide angle lens, comes with all the same accessories, and records in HD. The good thing about this camera is that when power is supplied to it, it can turn itself on an begin recording.

Motorcycle USB Socket
If you wire in a motorcycle USB power socket though a switch, you can supply and control the power going to your camera. I have my power switch on my dash. The camera's USB cable plugs into this and gives power to the camera.

My setup
Power is supplied via the switch

The switch powers the motorcycle USB connector above/behind the passengers head

Which in-turn powers the camera itself

Easy on/off flick of the switch camera that will not run out of power. 16gb class 10 micro SD card can be as little as 3.

Cool... may just buy a couple and that way both cars have a pair Very Happy

How do you set it up to record on power-on? Simple setting?

Its very easy, set it to dash cam mode and you are ready to rock.

See this good review of the SJ4000 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnHDu-oW7_Y

For SLS I roll up to the line to leave the pit lane, flick the switch to give the camera power to turn it on, then on the cool down lap flick the switch to turn it off again. No wading through loads of dead camera footage Cool

If you get a motorcycle USB cable like the one I have linked to it will have 2 USB ports, very useful if you want front and rear facing cameras. They will both go on and off a the same time when controlled by the switch.

That's a really good solution! Thanks for the heads up. I have the same issue sitting in the pitlane waiting.

I will pick up a couple too. (Adam, if you find a seller interested in GB then i'll happily take two sets.)

for that cost you can have front, rear, driver and 'artistic' <read - daft> cams!

I'll get a switch button on the steering wheel, and perhaps get it linked into ECU logging so they all start at same time Very Happy

The only thing you cannot do is have the cable connected when the camera is in its case and there is not other way to remotely turn it on. I wanted to have one on my front splitter like Mark does.

if you want to do the stupid'o'mount of cameras thing you could do power to USB hub then have that power the other things possibly. that way you can have your gazillion cameras being powered.
