Yeah, sorry all Sad

I have replaced the link with the cheapest proper SJ4000 I can find on eBay, in the UK too.

I played with my SD28 at the track day and the picture quality was awful Sad but I dont know why as I have seen vid on youtube that looks decent. I got this cam from a UK seller and reading the ad again he does hint that it is an SJ4000 "style" camera, but it is deffo not clear enough.

Adam, I also bought an "SJ4000" from the same seller in China as you. I am still hopeful that the cams you and I bought will be SJ4000 copies and good for what we want it for. My one is still to arrive, it should be here tomorrow though. In the ad the wording is that it is an unbranded SJ4000 and it lists roughly the same tech specs as a real SJ4000. Looking back at the ad for the SD28 the file formats are different. Anyway fingers crossed, if it isn't as described we should be able to send it back.

One of my work mates bought a proper version of the new SJ4000. He paid 43 delivered (link on the first page). This proper version has all the proper functionality including car mode Smile

real SJ4000's have a scratch off authentication code on the side of the box

The firmware version

Don't want to put a downer on all this, but (with my broadcast engineer hat on) you get what you pay for. Although much of the hardware may be spewing out the same factory as the top end Gopro, it will be failed QC and very outdated stock that would otherwise end up being scrapped.

More to the point, the licencing of the good quality codecs required by these cameras can't be paid for at these prices. They are most likely using cheep generic versions that are stripped down to the minimum possible spec. And that will show more on fast moving action, as distortion, hesitation, or simply missing detail.

Rant over Smile

I'm wondering though compared to say standard vbox quality it better or worse if you were using it for picture in picture (probably cool as rear view/in cockpit cam?)

The SD videobox isn't great but at least it has a broadcast spec global shutter (the whole frame is a single moment in time), so there's no distortion.

I agree. The 16.50 cameras are a punt. However the proper SJ4000's are a legit camera. They are not a fake GoPro but a "me too" product. Fair enough they might not deliver the same top level quality of a GoPro but for 43 you get a good 1080p cam that has an LCD screen. The equivalent GoPro is 250+ by the time you have all the accessories? (I am not up to speed on the full GoPro range.)

SJ4000 @ 720p (I don't bother with 1080p) https://youtu.be/ENU6PJNYIMQ YouTube dumbs the quality down Sad

This seems a pretty good option. Go Pro Heros are 150 in Costco just now but if this camera is just as good at 1/3 the price.
