Charging - Need special charger?
Just bought 2 more CTEK conditioners so would be a bit :S if needed another charger _________________ Impreza Race Car, 1200kg, 480bhp - SLS/SMRC

Looked into it when I bought my Odyssey battery.
Pretty sure they need a specific Lithium charger (£100 for CTek) and to get the Ah required for a saloon was coming in at about £800 for battery and charger.
Racing Batteries seem quite reasonably priced but not sure their range will be meaty enough for the Impreza. _________________ MD Racing

That does look a great way to save a little weight. I have a brand new red top in the Alfa but when it dies i'll certainly be taking a look at this option. _________________ Alfa Romeo GT Junior |

It's only 6Ah, I needed at least 12 for the Corrado. CCA is quite low too, enough to crank a cold engine?
Plenty around the £150 mark if 6Ah will do, it seems to be once you get into double digits with decent CCA the price rockets. _________________ MD Racing

Lowell - can I borrow yours for a test? See if Fee's car likes it? _________________ Impreza Race Car, 1200kg, 480bhp - SLS/SMRC

RE Charging...
Quote: | Do not use a charger that has auto-desulfation since it will hurt Lithium Phosphate batteries. Overcharging is also an enemy to batteries. Your charger should have a float mode which prevents the battery from being overcharged. |
The CTEK chargers I have state Desulphation as one of their 8 steps :/ min _________________ Impreza Race Car, 1200kg, 480bhp - SLS/SMRC

Contact Allan McDonald, a hill-climber who sells Li-Ion batteries via his site www.skyrichbattery.co.uk
Best call him on Tel 01387 751152
or allan@allanmcdonald.co.uk
You'll also find him over on Flatchat if you can avoid the flack

Adam, as you know, I've just got one for the racecar.
It's all a bit confusing, because the tech is all so new its still all wrapped up in marketing BS.
From my research:
- Lithium aH ratings are roughly 1/3-1/2 of those for a lead acid battery, due to LiFePo4's ability to use more of its available capacity (traditional batteries are dead at 40% capacity, while a lithium will keep on delivery down to 5-10%).
- Like-for-like Lithium batteries deliver a bigger CCA hit than a lead acid. Also different from a trad battery, the hit gets bigger as you keep trying and the battery warms up. My new racecar one is rated at 5aH and 280CCA but happily turned over the Jaguar (4L SC V .
- Chargers. Now this is a bit of a minefield. A lithium battery likes to be charged in one solid hit and not kept on a maintenance charge, whereas most "intelligent" trad chargers tend to go through various charge and discharge cycles, and switch to a trickle charge once the battery reaches 80-90% charge. Also some fancy ones have a de-sulphurisation mode, which kills LiFePo4 batteries. As I understand it, you'd be fine with a simple/old-fashioned one that delivers a constant 3amp current at 1-2v above the battery's target voltage, so long as you switch it off as soon as the battery's charged.
I bought a cheapy Lithium-specific one off eBay for £40, but I'm also building a DC-to-DC charger (from a simple step-up module off ebay), so I can keep the lithium jobbie topped up throughout race day. In theory, I should never need the mains charger, but I thought it best to get one anyway.
ETA - here's the charger I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121641547932?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT _________________ Strong Broo Racing |

Fee's car seems a no brainer - it starts quickly etc.
Mine takes a few turns to sync all sensors and what not.
Will get one for Fee's first _________________ Impreza Race Car, 1200kg, 480bhp - SLS/SMRC
