I'm looking for a supplier of balsa wood (light weight wood).

Pref sheets about 1.8m x 1.5m or larger. I understand at that size they may be 'joined' etc

Does anyone know of suppliers? Tried online and can only see very small 'hobby' sheets

Why balsa? Balsa is a classified as a 'hard wood' and is petty difficult to get these days, certainly in large sizes. Is it for GRP or carbon sandwich? You can work PIR insulation board which (IIRC) is resistant to resin.

yup, exactly that.

Was thinking foam as an alternative but will check out the insulation boards. Hadnt thought of that.... just the household boards you whap between batons?

Decent thickness options there without having to layer/bond too.

Was goign to use balsa layers with inboard 'speed' holes to reduce weight further... layered up to about 20-25mm and external kevlar/carbon layer

bosh... 25mm celotex sheet for <20

Take it you'd need to remove the foil back to avoid potential separation issues.

nice and easy to shape the leading edge of splitter too Thumbs Up

B&Q stock it. The foil is paper backed so if you peel it off it may leave a paper surface, but thats ideal for bonding. But bear in mind the foil is structural and removing it will weaken the sheet. It is pretty inert and stable but I'd test it with the resin you use as I'm not a 100% that all resin types are the same. I've used a cheap polyester resin successfully.

What is a caravan board? Is it composite or just a finished ply? Had a quick google but several options

I think it would be quite heavy, and not sure on its suitability for laying up carbon/resin

Must be composite
When repositioning shelves in Motorhome I was surprised that something nearly half inch thick was no weight at all. It also must be strong as one use is a shelf. Motorhomes use this stuff for lightness which makes sense. Don't know where to get it but try a motor home sales/ repair place. Or contact Will at Mill Garage in Duns who did my Sprinter mods. He might know.

those boards are thin ply with a covering as far as I can see.

I'm ideally looking for something 15-20mm thick and very light
